Automation has its limits

Despite the rapid development of sensor technology cars can’t think and they can’t ‘see’ what you can see. Take vehicle lighting for example. The sensors for automatic headlights rely on ambient light level rather than on vision and visibility as perceived by you, so they will not always get it right. Heavy rain or fog during the day can reduce your vision and vehicle visibility to dangerous levels, yet ambient light levels may remain sufficiently high to prevent your automated lights from coming on.

As automatic lights take a little time to react to changing ambient light, if you drive into a tunnel it’s always best to switch lights on manually rather than wait and hope that the system will react in time. Automation is no substitute for thinking.
