Switch those faulty wipers
Do you know when your windscreen wiper blades need changing? As it rains frequently in the UK, you are urged to check your wipers before setting off and change them at least every 12 months. Depending on weather conditions, they may need to be changed after six months. It is definitely time to change them when they start to smear rather than clear water from your windscreen. Poor visibility means you may not see a hazard quickly and slows your reaction time. Modern flat wiper blades don’t screech on the windscreen anymore, so if you are listening for an audible warning you’ll miss the signs. You could also be charged with driving without due care and attention, which carries a £100 on-the-spot fine and up to three penalty points on your licence
Be wiper wise
Windscreen wiper blades are arguably one of the most important safety features on your vehicle providing you with a clear view of the road ahead. If your vision is poor then there’s a greater risk of an incident. As wipers are subject to natural wear and tear and environmental conditions, check the state of your blades regularly looking for wear on the edge of the blade and checking the rubber for small cuts or cracks. If in instances of bad weather you find your vision is obscured by spray and smears, or if your windscreen wipers screech or make a lot of noise, then it’s time to replace them.
For maximum safety, it’s recommended you replace your wiper blades at least once a year. If you can’t remember when you last changed them, then it is most likely time to invest in a replacement set. It’s always best to replace a complete wiper blade rather than just the rubber part, and more economical in the long run. You should also note that your vehicle can fail its MOT if your wipers are defective.
